3G, Android, T-Mobile

T-Mobile USA has officially confirmed what unofficially has been the talk of the town–the debut of the first Google Android based mobile phone. The T-Mobile G1 is made by HTC (the device was code named the HTC Dream) and was introduced this morning at a press conference in NYC. While this is the first Android device to be announced

there should be many more following. The G1 is a T-Mobile exclusive (both USA and Europe).

Specs and features of the G1 include:

Quad-band GSM / Dual band 3G / EDGE / WifiTouch screen with iPhone like draggingSlide out QWERTY keyboard3 megapixel camera with auto-focusAmazon MP3 store app to download DRM-free songs over WiFiMulti-taskingIM (Yahoo/MSN/AIM/Google Talk)Google Maps with street viewHTML email client (POP3 and IMAP) plus contact and calendar syncing for Gmail usersWeb browser using WebKit

The G1 will retail for $179 with a 2-year contract when it starts shipping on October 22nd. Current customers can order online and the G1 will be delivered when it’s launched. Like the iPhone, the G1′s service agreement requires a data plan. Unlimited data with 400 messages runs $25 monthly while unlimited data and unlimited messaging will cost $35 monthly. Since it’s a 3G device the phone will only be made available in T-Mobile’s current 3G markets. You can use T-Mobile USA’s coverage search tool to find out if your area is 3G or not, though the number of markets should be expanding rapidly. The G1 will not be available without a contract or via pre-paid service.

The European launch of the T-Mobile G1 will be mostly in the first quarter of 2009. The UK will get a jump and get the handset in November.

I have an almost unbroken rule of not answering to phone calls from numbers I don’t recognize or haven’t added them to my phonebook yet. Same policy applies times two every time someone is trying to get in touch with me but blocks their number sending feature. I did miss a few calls that way, which I shouldn’t. but I managed to adjust.

What I wasn’t able to block were the SMS messages. Of course you don’t have to respond to all those messages but then again, it’s human nature to react and text back.

Good thing T-Mobile has decided, after being sued and loosing a case in court over some messages, that their subscribers will have now the opportunity of blocking all unwanted messages and calls from certain people. What people? Your boss? Mother in law? Crazy-b**** ex girlfriend? Regular pranksters? Anyone! The sky is the limit. Way to go T-Mobile!

Is this another rumor? According to Swisscom they are going to sell the 3G iPhone in three colors: black, white and silver.

They are cooler than AT&T which has for now, just the black version. Prices you ask? They say 659 Swiss Francs (about $630) for 16GB version and 799 Swiss Francs (about $760). The 16GB will come in black and the 32GB will come in all three colors. According to the same rumor/source.

The support pages are in place. The interactive demonstrations are up. And the full user manual is ready for grabs. All these point to just one thing – an imminent release for the much-awaited Nokia N78, may be just a matter of days or weeks.

The N78 was officially announced in February at MWC ’08 along with another behemoth that is the N96. The N78 is an all-in-one device that combines

music, photography, navigation, and productivity into an attractive sleek and stylish design. In addition to integrated aGPS technology with Nokia Maps and Geotagging support, the N78 also has a 3.2-megapixel camera and a card slot to raise storage up to 8GB via microSD cards. The phone houses a 2.4-inch QVGA display capable of 16 million colors. And of course, how can we forget its list of connectivity options including WiFi, HSDPA, and Bluetooth, all meshed into Symbian OS 3rd Edition FP2.

With an estimated price tag of $550 before taxes, this is one phone that will be worth every penny.

Benq isn’t exactly breaking ground with its cell phones, although I do have a certain spot for their computer peripherals. In the same vein, the e55 is just a phone with a dash of style mixed in a clamshell form factor.

The e55 works on GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz and WCDMA 2100 networks with GPRS and EDGE support. The only highlight, if you can call it that, is inclusion of Bluetooth with support

for the usual array of Bluetooth profiles. All this is crammed into a stylish flip phone with a smooth finish, but mind you, this is just what’s been doing the rounds on the internet and that’s what we will get until the official announcement on complete details on the e55 including its price and release date.

DreamCatcher Software announced its latest software for the Apple iPhone, the iPhone Video Recorder. Capable of recording audio and video into MPEG4 format, you get up to 1 hour of high quality recording in a file of about 60 megabytes. The recording is done at 15 frames per second.

You have the option to play back the video on the iPhone or download it to a computer or even upload to YouTube. The software also lets you pause the video encoding process (usually performed at the end of a recording) and resume when your phone is idle. Recording on the fly slows down the process, resulting in a less-than-acceptable frame rate, so that’s something to keep in mind.

The iPhone Video Recorder is compatible with iPhone firmware versions 1.1.x, 1.2.x and 2.0. A 30-second time limited trial version is available for download from their website.

Yes please! It’s an island! We need someone to bring over some food, water we have, and the 3G unlocked iPhone!

Everyone who’s anyone in the Australian cell phone carrier world is announcing iPhone deals. After Vodafone last week, we have today Optus saying that the iPhone has been secured and it’s going to be available in Australia sometime later this year.
