First out of the sack of presents is the extension of . Now there’s no excuse not to call all your relatives over the holidays ;-D

Thank you for all your custom and support in 2007. We’ve worked hard to build a new type of phone company for the internet age and have launched and our brand new application for Facebook®.

And 2008 should be even better. We’ve got all kinds of goodies bubbling away in the labs, fizzing next to some rather peculiar VoIP-enabled test tubes, but we’ll leave news of those for now.

eed of web workers, then you should be very familiar by now with the idea of web conferencing. Being your own boss, working your own hours, deciding on where you’ll work from is great, but there will be times when you need to discuss plans with partners and clients. That’s easy in the traditional business world; you go and meet with the client face to face, have a chat and show him what you’ve been working

on. However, in the new world of remote work, that’s just not going to happen unless you do a bit of traveling.

So what are your options? How can you work remotely with others in your company and your clients? Here are a few basic tools we use on a daily basis.

Email – the killer app of all time, use it for everything from keeping clients informed to reminders.IM – comes in very handy to stay in the loop with events in the office.Softphone – used regularly to make cheap calls to contacts and coworkers.

As I’m sure you will agree, there’s absolutely nothing groundbreaking there. Each tool is great at what it was intended for, but there are times when even a combination of tools fall short or what’s required. If you’ve ever had to do a remote proposal, you’ll know exactly what we mean.

Core Competencies Of The Best Web Conferencing Apps

This is the beauty of web conferencing applications; they are the complete solution for teleworkers. So before you run off, credit card in hard, what should a good web conferencing solution have?

OS agnostic – a web conferencing solution for a company standardized on Windows sounds great, but what if your clients run Linux or Mac OS X? No, the complete tool will be a web conferencing tool for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.Speed – you don’t want to wait on your screen to redraw every time you open a new tab or change to a different workbook. A good web conferencing tool must be fast!Affordable – part of the benefits of using web conferencing is that it is cheaper and more environmentally friendly than driving or flying to meet up. But in the world of ridiculously cheap flights, web conferencing needs to be very cheap or businesses may as well send you off to meet face to face.Collaboration – any web conferencing tool worth it’s salt should have drawing and annotation functionality, multiple presenters and smooth screen sharing. If an application can’t do this, then they shouldn’t be on your final list.Communication – you should be able to IM participants, video conference, teleconference and use VoIP to call contacts.

Web Conferencing Services

Here are some of the best conferencing services available now. Some will involve downloading a small Java applet, others are completely web-based and will work right in your browser window. Some are free, others charge a monthly fee. We’re sure that you’ll find what you’re looking for.

Acrobat Connect
Adobe pitch their Connect web conferencing application at professionals and companies as a comprehensive communication solution. When you actually scan down through the list of features supported by Adobe Connect you quickly realize that this is not for small companies, but rather for target oriented corporations with offices and departments located in numerous geographic locations. Some of the more notable features and capabilities in Adobe Connect include branded meeting rooms, multiple presenters, video conferencing, voice, scheduled meetings, recording, remote file storage, web seminar hosting and much more. This is certainly not for small companies, and is priced as such. If you don’t need as much functionality then we would highly recommend WebEx as an alternative.dimdim
This is an example of another Web 2.0 company that doesn’t understand the principle of capitalizing. This particular web conferencing application is browser based and unlike runs on open source code. With dimdim you can share screens, show slides, IM, talk and present documents within the browser window. Unlike many of its competitors dimdim does not require any downloads for web conference attendees. If you want more than the free version you can actually host dimdim on your own server, which is ideal should you be presenting material sensitive material such as company financials or strategy.GoToMeeting
With tight integration with Microsoft Outlook to cover meeting invitations, GoToMeeting covers most of the bases for web conferencing well. GoToMeeting allows presenters to share their screen with web conference attendees as well as share their keyboard. The application is also capable of supporting multiple presenters, which comes in useful when you are attending a meeting with heads of various departments in attendance. Furthermore, web conferences hosted with GoToMeeting may be recorded, saving you the hassle of recording your Skype call. While there is everything needed for a basic web conference in GoToMeeting, it does lack some key features offered by some of the others listed here. For instance, you can’t annotate on a document or page to help put your point across, which in our opinion represents a huge gap in functionality. Integrated VoIP and video conferencing are also absent. However, if you don’t mind not being able to see your attendees or talk to then through GoToMeeting, then give it a try. If, on the other hand, you do need a more fully featured web conferencing application, may we suggest WebEx.Live Meeting
As you would expect from an application made by Microsoft, Live Meeting runs alongside and is integrated with Office and PowerPoint in particular. For companies based around Microsoft Office products, we’d say it’s time to give Live Meeting some concerned thought. It can handle two-way VoIP and PSTN calls, video conferencing, support for many file types (chiefly Office), recording, whiteboard and tools for annotation that can be used during a presentation. Microsoft Live Meeting is quite a good package as far as web conferencing tools go, however we would be reluctant to recommend it over WebEx.Vyew
Vyew is a relative newcomer in the web conferencing sector that requires no software installation because it runs in the browser window using Flash, which can be branded with your company logo and color scheme. You can use Vyew to present and collaborate on just about any type of content, whether that be a Word document, PowerPoint presentation or a JPEG, and use the whiteboard to make comments. Attendees can draw, comment, take screenshots, chat and use teleconferencing to increase the productivity of meetings. However, Vyew can’t do video conferencing or web seminars. What’s the main benefit of Vyew? Price. The basic version that will meet most company’s requirements is free, and you can pay a small amount per month for more power and customization.WebEx
WebEx is a Cisco owned company that has become synonymous with web conferencing around the world. WebEx web conferencing is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, so no matter what platform your business or clients use you’ll be covered. This is an excellent solution when you want to show a design or document to multiple attendees, screen sharing is fast and is accompanied by a suite of communication and collaboration tools. In testing we found setting up WebEx a doddle, audio quality was great as was video. WebEx supports multiple presenters, which is ideal when you have people from different departments making presentations. We particularly liked the ability to invite attendees to call in and join a teleconference. Would we recommend WebEx web conferencing? Absolutely!Yugma
Yugma is an excellent web conferencing application that is compatible with Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. VoIP isn’t directly integrated into the Yugma platform, but it does integrate with Skype. We found that screen sharing with Yugma was mostly good, but not as responsive as that of WebEx. It offers IM between attendees, multiple presenters and can be used for free for up to 10 attendees. Yugma is a good option if you don’t need to web conference on a regular basis or are looking for a free web conferencing solution.

VoIP-Sol.com Recommends

If you are just looking to share your screen for the occassional online meeting, then we suggest you go for Yugma. If you are an intermediate user and plan on using online meetings to communicate with coworkers and clients, we recommend WebEx. Should you be looking for an enterprise class, fully featured and extensible web conferencing capable of everything from video conferencing to hosted webinars, go for Adobe Connect.

enowned for low price calls, far from it. If you’ve ever got the bill for receiving a few calls while out of the country, you’ll know exactly what we mean. Although international roaming charges are starting to come down from their lofty highs, especially in Europe, it’s still very expensive to call home or receive calls when away on a trip.

If you don’t have a call plan with inclusive international

calls, then mobile VoIP is ideal for you. Even if you make frequent calls only to domestic mobiles and landlines, mobile VoIP can save you a bunch of cash.

What Is Mobile VoIP?

The Wikipedia defines mobile VoIP as follows:

VoIP Mobile or ‘Mobile Voice over Internet Protocol’ is the application of Voice over IP technology to mobile handsets.

In layman’s terms, mobile VoIP is a way for you to place calls from your mobile phone that connect with the recipient via the internet. The main benefit of mobile VoIP is the combination of flexibility and cost savings on domestic, and especially, international calls.

Are There Requirements For Mobile VoIP?

Yes, mobile VoIP does have some basic requirements. Obviously you’ll need a mobile phone, but it will also need to be a dual-mode phone with WiFi connectivity, 3G, HSDPA or EVDO. You’ll also need a data plan that will allow your mobile VoIP provider to connect to the internet and place the call.

Different mobile VoIP providers require different capabilities. For instance, a mobile VoIP service that uses WiFi will require you to be on a WiFi network in order to make a call. Other services will roam in the background for the best connection whether that be via WiFi or 3G and let you make a call.

Recommended Mobile VoIP Providers

EQO
There has been quite a bit of buzz around EQO, and for good reason. Setting up EQO is a breeze, download it to your phone and sign in. Once you have logged in you’ll see all the contacts you have stored in your account, text messages and IM networks. Calls to domestic and international landlines and mobiles are cheap, as are text messages. You can IM for free with contacts on AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, Google Talk, Jabber and ICQ. If you can get your friends and family setup with EQO then you can call them free because calls to any other EQO user regardless of location are free. This is right up there with the best in mobile VoIP and comes highly recommended.Gizmo
Already a popular desktop softphone, you can run the SIP-compatible Gizmo on over 200 mobile phones from Nokia, Blackberry, Samsung and others. It’s a fairly simple software install on your mobile, which when setup allows you to IM contacts on Gizmo, Google Talk, Jabber, MSN, AIM and Jabber as well as send files to other Gizmo users. Calls to international numbers are cheap, SMS and MMS is also significantly cheaper. Calls work just like Jajah, the central server calls you and the recipient, which means both calls are incoming; hence the savings. The great thing about Gizmo is that you can have access to all your contacts whether you are at your computer or off globetrotting with your mobile!fring
While we’re not great fans of companies who are allergic to capital letters, we’ll forgive fring. So how does it work? It’s fairly simple really; download the fring application, install it on your mobile, setup your account and start calling people with VoIP over 3G, EDGE and WiFi networks. There is a degree of flexibility with fring that we love because you can IM or call contacts on Skype, Google Talk, MSN, Twitter, ICQ and it also works with SIP services like Gizmo. Furthermore, fring will roam seamlessly between available 3G, EDGE and WiFi networks so you get optimal performance. Calls to your contacts, landlines and mobiles are extremely cheap with fring. You can use fring on mobiles running Symbian and Windows Mobile.Jajah
This is a fully web-based mobile VoIP solution that has caught the attention of many users. To use Jajah Mobile simply fire up your mobile browser, visit their site, login and you’ll have access to all the numbers stored in your Jajah address book; it’s then just a matter of click to call. Once you select who you wish to call, your phone will ring, the recipient’s phone starts to ring, you both pick up and start talking. Calls to landlines and mobiles are indeed cheap, but the clincher is that calls to other Jajah contacts are completely free no matter where they are. Jajah is an elegant solution to mobile VoIP, we highly recommend it.Mobiboo
Developed in the UK, Mobiboo runs on your mobile and affords you cheap calls to international landlines and cheap domestic calls to landlines and mobiles. Admittedly Mobiboo does not have the feature set of some of the others, but it is worth a look at if you have got a dual-mode phone capable of connecting to WiFi networks. If you live or work in an area with good WiFi coverage, then it is worth having a look to save some cash on your calls.Nimbuzz
Founded in the Neherlands and having received major funding, Nimbuzz is an application that is downloaded and installed on your mobile phone. You can then IM and call contacts on MSN, Google Talk and Skype thanks to their technology. Although IM is free, calls are not. However, international calls are cheap because Nimbuzz will call their local switch, which routes the call over the internet to the recipient.Rebtel
Similar in terms of functionality to Jajah, Rebtel lets you make cheap domestic and international calls to landlines and mobiles by assigning landline numbers to contacts. When you set up a contact you give Rebtel their phone number, Rebtel then gives you a local landline number for them to store on your phone. Rebtel don’t serve every country in the world, but it does cover most of Europe and North America. If you put the time in to get it all setup, Rebtel will save you money. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of some other mobile VoIP providers, but what it does, it does well.Skype Mobile
Skype was arguably the application that kicked the whole VoIP revolution off, in the mainstream anyway. So for a long time we’ve been using Skype on our computers, now you can use it on your mobile and get all the benefits. You can download and install Skype Mobile on Windows Mobile and Pocket PC. There are also many WiFi phones available that work with Skype, so if you live and / or work in an area covered with WiFi this is a very good option. However, you will forsake the flexibility offered by some of the competing mobile VoIP services in that you won’t be able to chat or call contacts from other Google Talk, MSN etc.Truphone
Out of all the mobile VoIP services out there, Truphone is perhaps the most well know. Based in the UK, Truphone is an application that you download and install on your phone. This application works a bit of magic to route calls from your mobile across the internet where WiFi is available. You’ll need a dual-mode phone that can connect to WiFi hotspots for this to work. The upshot? With Truphone mobile VoIP you get free calls to mobiles in the USA, Canada, China, Hong Kong and Singapore, cheap calls to mobiles in the EU and, off course, free calls to other Truphone users. There is also no setup cost; just download, find a wireless network and start making calls.Woize
While not as fully featured as some of the other mobile VoIP providers listed here, Woize is a good solution for a light user just wanting to save money. As with many of the others, Woize is a software application that is installed on your Windows Mobile or Pocket PC phone. Woize will route calls over the internet once connected to a WiFi network. Calls to landlines and mobiles are cheap, calls to other Woize contacts are free.

Drawbacks

Mobile VoIP is awesome, but it does have negatives. First of all, some of the most popular mobile VoIP providers require a WiFi internet connection, which isn’t so handy when you are out of town. As well as this, WiFi networks can be patchy, although their signals can be improved. Furthermore, calls may be cheap or even free, but mobile VoIP does require a data plan.

Pseudo-mobile VoIP

If you do not have a mobile phone capable of running a mobile VoIP application or you don’t have WiFi or mobile broadband, then there is another option: the humble laptop and softphone combination. It also doesn’t matter what OS you are running either; there are softphones for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

Why You Should Care

While VoIP has yet to catch on with the masses at work or in the home, statistics suggest that mobile VoIP is set to grow massively in popularity. Mobile carriers offer various tariffs with a set number of free minutes per month, but excess calls are very expensive. Mobile VoIP will change all that with huge savings on calls to landlines and mobiles, both domestic and international.

Just like the free computer to computer calls we’ve all become so familiar with, mobile VoIP promises free mobile calls to contacts using the same mobile VoIP provider.

uch turmoil with allegations of patent infringements posing a serious threat to their business. If you are wondering about the future of Vonage as a VoIP service provider, then it would be an idea to start looking for some alternatives to Vonage.

While Vonage’s marketing budget is legendary in terms of size, do not let this lead you to think there are no Vonage alternatives. There are some great VoIP providers out there, you perhaps just haven’t heard of them yet!

Whether it is a business VoIP solution based on Vonage that you would like alternatives to or a simple alternative to your Vonage home user account, here are some highly qualified options.

These Vonage alternatives are not ranked in any order other than alphabetically.

Packet8
If you want an alternative VoIP supplier for your home or business needs, Packet8 is a good choice. Packet8 works much like Vonage; when you register for their service you get a VoIP phone adapter than routes your phone calls to the recipient via the internet. Packet8 offers great deals on local long distance international calls to a broad range of countries, voicemail, three-way conference calling, call waiting and caller ID with name as standard.

Lingo
With unlimited calls within the USA and to Canada, Puerto Rico and 20+ other countries included for as little as $21.95 per month, Lingo is a top quality low cost alternative to VoIP. Addon extras include extra virtual numbers with choice of local and international numbers, voicemail, caller ID, 411 directory service, e911 support, call forwarding and call waiting.Skype
Firmly established as a leading softphone, Skype is actually a capable alternative to Vonage, especially in the home environment. Now with a range of Skype compatible handsets that do not need to be cabled into your computer, you can get the best features of Skype combined with the more traditional phone. However, Skype may not be a good alternative for a business based on Vonage with a substantial number of users.ViaTalk
ViaTalk is another good alternative to Vonage. ViaTalk is available throughout the USA and offers caller ID, call forwarding, call waiting, free 411 directory service, softphone client and e911 support. Added extras include additional virtual phone numbers, toll free numbers, fax and additional lines.VoIP.com
If you are looking for an easy, cheap alternative to Vonage then it would be worth looking into VoIP.com. VoIP.com offers unlimited calls to the USA, Canada and Puerto Rico for as little as $16.95 per month. However, price is not the only thing that makes VoIP.com a viable Vonage alternative. Three-way calling, voicemail, caller ID, call forwarding, existing number transfer, a softphone client and much more make VoIP.com extremely plausible.

services, some obviously more popular than others. In the light of a lack of data on the precise number of users for each VoIP service, we’ve decided to use freely available data on the number of searches per month to rank these providers.

While the top 2 are not surprising in the slightest, there are a number of surprises in the list. For starters, the gap between 2nd and 3rd place is marked – approximately

442,000 searches. Secondly, 3rd place belongs to a relative newcomer to the VoIP bandwagon – Google Talk. Thirdly, the much vaunted Sightspeed has not made the cut into the top 10. It should also be noted how well Jajah is doing; while far from attaining a mass market presence they have clearly made some waves in the VoIP services space.

In the unlikely event that we have some VoIP investors subscribed to our feed, we are not in any way suggesting that this list should be taken as an accurate metric for brand awareness or user numbers. Furthermore, we ranked the most popular VoIP services based on the number of searches carried out in the USA only on Google, Yahoo and MSN.

Skype – 890,000 searches pm
As you would expect, Skype is the most searched-for of all VoIP providers and services. It isn’t too hard to see why either. Free to download, cross platform, free computer to computer calls, cheap calls to landlines and mobiles, no contracts, chat, video, SMS, an ecosystem of compatible phones and more make this a VoIP service to be reckoned with.

Vonage – 504,00 searches pm
Second is just about where I expected Vonage to land in this list of top providers. Fully featured and easy to install, Vonage has everything you already have with your current phone supplier and more. However, judging by the number of searches Vonage still have a way to go before people ditch their softphone and make a full switch to VoIP for all their calls.

Google Talk – 62,000 searches pm
Not what you would call a fully featured softphone, Google Talk doesn’t come close to Skype in terms of functionality just yet. However, you can see the power of the Google brand at work here; Google Talk hasn’t been around as long as Gizmo or iChat but there are significantly more people searching for it.

iChat – 15,000 searches pm
While it may only be available on Mc OS X, iChat clearly has a strong following. While I didn’t have access to historical data, we can say with a fair degree of certainty that this number is increasing in line with the growth in Mac users.

Jajah – 12,000 searches pm
When this service first appeared on the scene it caused quite a stir, and for good reason. Instead of an installed application, Jajah is web-based. When it was released many derided the service, but given the rise of social networking and the Jajah widget, you can appreciate how much of a game changer this could be. At 12,000 monthly searches it has gained traction, but still has some way to go to compete with Skype et al.

Packet 8 – 8,000 searches pm
Packet8 would be deemed as one of the prime competitors to Vonage. With a complete range of solutions for both home and business users, Packet8 offers just about everything you would ever need in a VoIP solution (unless you like hacking Asterisk). They’re a very established brand, so we’re surprised they aren’t getting more people searching for them.

VoIP.com – 3,000 searches pm
With a domain like that, one would assume that VoIP.com aren’t short of traffic. Even though they are competitive with Vonage and Packet8 in terms of functionality, it seems that the brand hasn’t caught on just quite as much. But unlike Vonage, they weren’t throwing cash around on marketing like it was going out of fashion.

ViaTalk – 3,000 searches pm
Very much in the same league as Vonage, Packet8 and VoIP.com, ViaTalk has been around for quite some time and is very established as a provider of services for home and business use. Unlike others, ViaTalk does not offer unlimited free calls within the USA as standard. It is surprising though that (comparatively) so few people are searching for their brand. Perhaps this is a sign that VoIP still has some way to go before being widely accepted by the mainstream or there is very little growth in new entries.

Gizmo – 3,000 searches pm
While arguably a more powerful softphone than market leader Skype, Gizmo still has a niche following as is evidenced to some extent by the number of people searching for it.

Truphone – 900 searches pm
This upstart UK based mobile VoIP service works with Nokia mobile phones. It’s main competitor, Rebtel, doesn’t feature in the top 10.

But there are some more VoIP providers, services and applications that have not made the cut into the top 10.

ZingoTel – 700 searches pmWengoPhone – 500 searches pmSightspeed – 300 searches pmRebtel – no searches recorded

Data used to compare these services courtesy of the most excellent keyword suggestion tool.

e pocket just for chatting with your friends or family? Feeling the pinch after spending a few too many hours chatting on your mobile? Then one of these internet phones are for you.

Most of these internet phones allow you to make calls from your computer to other computers, landlines and mobiles anywhere in the world. However, we must make it clear that by ‘free’ we mean that these are free to download

and any calls to landlines or mobiles are not free, whereas calls to other computers are free.

Have a look, download, try them out and find the perfect internet phone for you.

AIM Pro – Aimed squarely at businesses, AIM Pro is a beefed up version of AIM that offers secured IM, voice and video. It will only run on Windows and is integrated with Microsoft Outlook and has desktop sharing built in, via WebEx. AIM Pro is much like iChat in terms of functionality in that it can’t call landlines or mobiles, just other contacts on your AIM list. Worth having a look at, free to download.

Gizmo – This is one of the most highly regarded of all the free internet phones currently available, and for good reason. Like most of the rest, Gizmo offers free calls to other members as well as heavily discounted calls to landlines and mobiles both nationally and internationally. It does chat well, but lacks video chat functionality. The big thing that Gizmo offers over the others is Asterisk PBX support, which makes it very appealing to small businesses. As you would expect, Gizmo is free to download.

iChat – As you would expect, iChat runs on Mac OS X only but does allow you to chat with any AIM, Jabber and Google Talk contact. This isn’t really a fully featured VoIP internet phone as it can’t call landlines or mobiles, but it does allow for good clear calls to computers. What is great is the video chats and special effects and screen sharing, allowing you to present documents and control a remote computer with ease. Available only for Mac OS X, you’ll need an installation CD to get your copy.

Sightspeed – While not as well known, Sightspeed is a fully featured internet phone. Like its main competitors, Sightpeed runs on Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. It does everything you would expect from an internet phone; free calls to other Sightspeed users, cheap calls to landlines and mobiles, chat etc. However, the most touted feature of Sightspeed is video, with many commentators in agreement that Sightspeed has the best video chat of any internet phone app. Download it for free and give it a go.

Skype – The ubiquitous Skype. It runs on Mac OS X, Windows and Linux, although it is fair to say that functionality is not the same across all versions. However, if it is a quick and easy free internet phone that you want with all bells and whistles, Skype is probably the one for you. Free phone calls from computer to computer, low cost calls from computer to landlines and the ability to acquire a local landline number via SkypeOut / SkypeIn, video chats are just some of the best features of Skype. It’s free to download, so you really can’t go wrong.

Vonage SoftPhone – If you are a subscriber to Vonage, then downloading the Vonage SoftPhone is a good way to maintain contact while on the road. If you are considering switching to a more complete internet phone solution, and by that I mean using a handset rather than headset or having a phone number so your friends can call as usual, then sign up for Vonage. I use their service at home and in the office without any problems and can highly recommend it. In fact, Vonage in conjunction with Skype (or one of the other internet phones listed here) is a pretty good way to stay in touch!

If you want more to choose from, have a look through these lists of internet softphones for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux.
